Practical Tips for Balancing Your Hormones
by Dr. Angela Mosley, MD, ABFM, Functional Medicine Physician
Minimize Your Stress: Emotional and physical stress cause hormone imbalances that negatively affect your energy, mood, libido and immune system. Choosing to live a lifestyle that allows your body and mind to thrive will help your hormone levels rebalance naturally.
Consume Plenty of Healthy Fats: Your hormones require adequate amounts of healthy fats to be produced and to function optimally. Foods like avocados, walnuts, almonds, and wild caught fish like salmon and tuna have higher amounts of Omega 3 fats which help support healthy hormone levels.
Get Plenty of Rest: Adequate sleep at night helps cortisol levels to optimize which in turn allows your other hormones to stay in balance.
Minimize Toxicity: Chemicals and toxins like standard household cleaning products, common personal care products, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and volatile organic compounds interrupt and disrupt hormone function in the body. In general, avoiding chemicals will help your hormones to function optimally. Drinking plenty of water, adding lemon juice and eating green leafy vegetables are the simplest ways to detox your body.
Move Your Body: Yep, you knew it was coming! Exercise has innumerable benefits for the overall health of your body, and has been shown to improve every functional and metabolic system in the body! There’s no way around it, finding a practical way to exercise regularly is a necessary part of hormonal balancing. Sufficient cardiovascular exercise allows hormones to metabolize correctly in the body and to be produced at adequate levels.
Balance Your Body’s Other Metabolic Processes: If the balance of any of your body’s systems become disrupted like Gut, Adrenal, Thyroid or Neurotransmitter Function, it can cause your hormones to not function properly. Working with a skilled functional medicine physician can help you identify any areas that are out of balance and create a natural wellness plan to restore your health and hormones, so you can live a vital life. If you’re a woman who has previously had your ovaries removed, the above recommendations will be of limited benefit and you may want to consider discussing bioidentical hormone replacement therapy with your functional medicine physician.
